End of grant for Master Students

Students who wish to do a master program have to finance it themselves. The grant is replaced by a loan from DUO.

The payback period of a loan is also extended to 20 years. Currently, students have 15 years to repay their loans.

Halbe Zijlstra, the secretary of state writes to the parliament: “Students will make conscious choices about their activities, earnings and potential delays in their studies. In this way studying gets the highest priority. Only then students can make the most of the expensive facilities at their college or university.”

Students will also more consciously choose a master program, the goverment says. “Students make the choice to follow a master’s generally on reasonable grounds. Receiving a basic grant will not be decisive anymore for the choice of whether or not to do a master’s degree program. It is predicted that students will improve cost-effectiveness and make more conscious choices.”

The parliament has to decide if Zijlstra’s plans will be implemented.
