Residents ‘Verbs’ angry at WonenBreburg

The students living at the Professor Verbernelaan are angry. At least, the international ones. Not only has WonenBreburg closed their living rooms , but doing the laundry is also problematic.

Last semester, the Dutch residents of the ‘Verbs’ possibly have complained about the noise caused by international students. There were a lot of parties especially in the first building. “We have the biggest kitchen and living room so dinners and parties were mostly held here. But the noise disturbance was caused by residents who lived here before us, we have nothing to do with that”, says Christina, a Colombian student who lives in the building since August.

The international students think this is unfair. In August WonenBreburg sent on email to the residents without a living room. They asked for the students’ bank accounts  numbers, so that they can send financial compensation for not being able to use the living rooms. The possibility of using the living rooms is included in the rent of almost 450 euros. WonenBreburg would pay 48 euros per semester to every student, but they have not seen any money yet.

“We don’t want compensation, we just want our living room for which we signed,” adds Lara, a student from Spain who is in Tilburg since the 15th of July. She tells about the closing of the living rooms: “It went very fast. One day we could just go into the living room and the next day it was closed. WonenBreburg had not communicated towards us at all about what was going to happen. They just did it.”

A spokeswoman of WonenBreburg says that because of the noise disturbance they choose to change all living rooms at Verbs and only furnish the shared kitchens. “The first living rooms will be closed and changed the earliest next summer,”she says. She admits that WonenBreburg has closed one living room, because it was bigger than the rest and all the parties were organized there. However, they don’t know about other living rooms that have been closed.

The housing association has also introduced an extra deposit of 200 euros. This is supposingly meant for cleaning.

Another problem is doing laundry. For all five (!) buildings, there are two washing machines and one dryer available. The third washing machine and a dryer are both out of order. Consequence: miserable long queues of students who want to wash their clothes.
