Peter van der Velden new Chair Professor of Victimology

From 1 January 2013 Peter van der Velden is appointed a professor of Victimology at the International Victimology Institute Tilburg (INTERVICT).

Van der Velden (1957) in the past 25 years has conducted several  large-scale epidemiological studies on the consequences of aggression, violence, robbery, war, animal crises, disasters (like the Enschede firework disaster) and other emergencies. His focus is both on the citizens and rescue workers affected by police, fire and ambulance.

He also focused on a question why some of the victims face long-term mental health problems such as depression and substance use. Van der Velden wants these insights to help victims in their improvement. The latter becomes his second major area of ??research: linking research and practice in the field of psycho-social crisis management.
