Take away student grants

Students who want to study abroad might have to hurry up if they want to apply for a student grant. The Secretary of Education is thinking about limiting these grants.

Recently the Court of Justice of the European Union has decided every EU-citizen who works in the Netherlands should be able to apply for students grants to study abroad. This makes it possible for for example, Polish workers who work in the Netherlands to apply for their children to study in Poland. Before, migrant workers were only able to apply for students grants for their children when they lived in the Netherlands for three out of six years.

The Dutch government is placed in a dilemma. They can either prevent the possible costs soaring through the roof by creating a limit of student grants, and potentially make it impossible for Dutch students to study abroad, or they can leave the situation as it is, risking a very steep bill.

Today the Lower House talked about a law which would make a limit possible, but the limit is not implemented yet. When the limit turns out to be necessary, a new debate will take place. The decision whether or not to create a limit will be made before the 1th of April.
