Zwijsen building being renovated

The Zwijsen building is being renovated. The strange building in the middle of the campus offers space for meetings with people from different cultures and beliefs, but not many people know why it looks like a submarine.

The idea was to create a place for reflection, meditation and prayer, but nobody knew how such a place should look like. So when Ad Roefs and Martien Jansen were given the task to design the building in 1991, they had a lot of freedom. They were given a number of square meters and a budget and started drawing. Jansen wanted to create a Dome, like at the Louvre, but that turned out to be too expensive. Roefs felt that if they couldn’t go under the ground, they had to design something above ground, but in such a way that it would still look it was  under ground.  Roefs designed the building as it is today. The ground around the building was raised by about one meter to intensify the feeling of ‘being underground’. The building is situated in the middle of the campus, to show that reflection has a central place at Tilburg University.
