Working at Globe Trotter…

I am writing this post back in my parents’ house in Rome. My exchange adventure in Tilburg is finished, I realized it when I saw on my blackboard the results of the last two exams I had in January. All good things come to an end, they say.

I feel lucky since I’m having the possibility to write some articles for Univers, so I can pretend I’m still a student at Tilburg uni. Why? Well, you have to know that I’m the editor in chief of Globe Trotter, the magazine of my university, Luiss Guido Carli and while being in The Netherlands, with Francine, Jozien, Frank and the whole amazing Univers’ team, we developed a partnership. The result of our collaboration is the International Student Post Network, a network that connects three editorial committees: the one of Univers, the one of Globe Trotter, and the one of Ekon, the Swedish magazine of the university of Gothenburg where my fellow colleague and friend Giovanni Russo worked during his Erasmus experience, thanks to the support of the local editor in chief Victor Wa. So, briefly I’m writing blogs for the Univers’ site, Giovanni wrote for Ekon and Victor and Jozien appeared in the last issue of Globe.

In this post I just want to address a few words about the magazine I direct, without boring you, I hope. It is difficult to express what this newspaper means to me. Just to give you a ‘funny’ example, two years ago, on a cold Sunday afternoon, I dumped the guy I was dating because I was working on my article about Chavez’ re-election. As a result, he got pissed and he broke up with me. I may conclude that at that time Globe Trotter was just ‘the one for me’… Moreover, and more importantly, thanks to Globe Trotter I re-discovered my passion for writing. I used to write stories since I was 6; during elementary school I used to print small pamphlets that I distributed to my classmates… But three years ago I started writing again to cure the depression and the slight eating disorders I was struggling with. Writing about my emotions, about the feelings I could not express in other ways, and writing my pieces for Globe Trotter were my therapy.

There are other numerous reasons why I feel blessed for directing Globe Trotter: it allowed me to meet one of my best friends, Beatrice, the previous editor in chief. A tough girl that is an incredible source of inspiration for me. I learned so much from here, she is brilliant, smart and she knows how to achieve her goals… So determined and ambitious! I don’t know why but from the first day we met she recognized my hidden potential and she nurtured my talent for writing by simply believing in me! I owe so much to her… When she told me she wanted me to be her ‘heir’, I asked myself: ‘Why me? Can I do it? Why the hell does she think I can do that?”.

But she was right, her trust in me gave me so much confidence, she empowered me, both professionally and personally. I really love her and even if we live in different countries, the distance hasn’t impacted our friendship. By always being very honest and direct with each other we have constructed a solid relationship that is meant to last. But Beatrice is not the only important friend I met thanks to Globe Trotter. All the 40 editors that are part of our editorial committee are very good friends to me with whom I can exchange views about politics, art, cinema and economic issues while sipping a glass of wine or eating a good pizza.

I cannot cite them all of course, otherwise you are going to fall asleep on your laptops, but I just would like to thank especially the members of the directive board who helped me managing the magazine while I was in Tilburg. So, a special thank goes to my vice-director, Lillo and to Anna, Ida, Agostino, Andrea, Giacomo, Francesca and Alessandro.

So, for today ‘That’s all folks!’. I hope you enjoyed this short overview about the Globe Trotter-family. If you are planning an exchange in Rome, in Luiss, and you are willing to join our group do not hesitate to contact me!
