The singing ambassador

Tilburg University is a melting pot full of interesting people. Student Rebekka Rohe finds and portraits them. Today: Jorge Galindo, master student of Intercultural Communication, musician and promoter of the Mexican culture.

“I want to make sure that with my little contribution I can gradually shift the international mentality and create a more positive image about Mexico”.

International Communication student Jorge originally comes from Puebla. He is a thoughtful and pleasant person, knowing exactly what he wants without taking himself too seriously. It seems easy for him to get the sympathy of people, which could be a major advantage for Jorge’s plan to change the foreign image about Mexicans. Through working in an embassy or the US immigration he hopes to positively influence the stereotyped international impression about his culture.

His family plays a big role in Jorge’s motivation; coming from a humble household, his parents pushed themselves to develop and make it easier for their children. “When I am about to complain I think of the fact that my parents did ten times more than me”.His passion and background explain Jorge’s motivation to become an ambassador: to show that “despite cultural differences, communication can serve as a bridge between people from all over the world. “We stick very much to our values and traditions, taking away the possibility to grow. Today you have to be international and sensitive towards the way people behave in other places”.

Still, there is a different, but not less important passion in Jorge’s life. “I want to do music for the rest of my life. It’s not something you can just quit”. At the tender age of fourteen Jorge played his first Nirvana and Green Day covers, a year later he wrote his first piece ‘Motionless’ and never stopped since. At the moment, he performs at various events and finished his first album.

Many try to persuade Jorge to change his mind about his career. Even his father sends messages stating: “You´re gifted and it is never too late to change your way”.  Yet, becoming a full-time musician is not an option for him. “I don’t have the gift to sell myself. People see that as a fail but for me failing would mean to not longer be able to write something that makes me happy”. Instead, Jorge aims at a mix: “to make music while having the passion to do something relevant”.
