Party leaders: Hans Haans (staff party Onafhankelijken)

The University Council elections commence the second week of April, but they already are more eventful than previous years. Not only can a new student party be found on the ballot for the first time in ten years, but also, the Abvakabo staff party has merged with the Onafhankelijken Why do you want to be on the University Council?
“That is very simple. I have enjoyed working at this university for fifteen years. I‘ll be able to contribute to maintaining this pleasant environment by having a seat on the University Council. It can be easier to do nothing, but I like to do my bit.”

What would you like to add to the University Council?
“I want the important issues to receive the attention they deserve. By presenting solid arguments, I’d like to convince the Executive Board of our point of view, in the hope that this will truly result in better solutions.”

What are the key issues for your party in the upcoming election?
“Our motto is, ‘cooperative, but with a critical attitude’. We approach every issue from that starting point and our goal is to constructively come up with alternatives and solutions. People are at the center of all of this. Key issues for us are the underappreciated role of lecturers and the quality of subcontracted services, such as ATP [outsourcing].”

What has the Onafhankelijken staff party accomplished so far?
“We have been instrumental in changing various things. On our initiative, the organization of Academic Support has been improved as part of the BEST project. There have also been significant improvements to how the secretarial pool is run.”

Why should staff vote for the Onafhankelijken staff party?
“We have our eye on the big picture. We represent them all: academic staff, support staff and PhD students. We enter each debate open-minded. This is how we are able to discuss matters, by cooperating, but with a critical attitude.”
