LEGO professor wanted

You can become the LEGO professor of play, development and learning at the University of Cambridge. You can apply till the 20th of January according to The Guardian. And it doesn’t even matter if you have experience as a professor or not.

“It’s more about what they can bring in terms of their research,” says professor Anna Vignoles, interim director of the new Center for Research on Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) and a member of Cambridge University’s faculty of education. The new professor will be appointed to lead PEDAL, aside from his or her teaching and research responsibilities. And the salary isn’t bad either. With almost 84.000 pounds (roughly 95.000 euros) per year you can buy a lot of new building blocks to experiment at home.

Vignoles thinks the value of play is relatively under-researched. “You have people who are claiming that it enhances learning, that it’s important, that it’s good for children’s well-being. All of that might be true, but actually there’s remarkably little evidence for that”, says Vignoles.

This project is funded by the LEGO foundation and they already paid four million pounds to the university. Two and a half million is set aside for the professorship. The other one and a half is going to the PEDAL center. The new professor can decide what to do with that money when he or she is appointed.
