Fine for delay in marking exams helps
Students no longer have to wait endlessly for exam results. Fining teachers who take too long to finish marking exams has helped, says vice dean of education Jenke ter Horst of Economics in daily De Stem today. University teachers get three weeks to mark exams. If they fail to meet the deadline teachers face a 2500 euro fine.
The marking measure was introduced in 2008 because, according to Ter Horst, students sometimes had to wait forever for exam results. A means to speed up the marking process of teachers was missing, Ter Horst says. Since the introduction of the penalty policy, however, everyone sticks to the deadline.
“Teachers are more aware of the deadlines now. And if marking exams takes longer, students are being informed about it faster. Students can accept that they occasionally have to wait for their results, as long as it is clear why it takes longer.”
