The Chinese are (not) coming!

Chinese graduation students more often choose to study in their own country, instead of going abroad to seek an advanced degree. In America, the flow of Chinese students to the U.S. has been slowing down for the second year in a row, webmagazine Science reports. And even though the numbers do not raise concern at first sight, the Americans react quite alarmed.

For America, China is the biggest source of foreign applicants. In the past few years, university administrators were already worried about a decrease in the number of applicants, because China is fanatically investing in its own higher education.

The results come from a survey from the Council of Graduate Schools. The 285 universities that responded to the survey report that 300.000 Chinese students applied for a place at an American university, and 72.000 of them received an offer of admission. American laboratories rely heavily on Chinese students, and it is not clear that American students are capable of and interested in filling those positions.
