TiSEM participates in experiment with student PhDs

TiSEM, Tilburg School of Economics and Management, participates in an experiment with student PhDs, initiated by Minister of Education Jet Bussemaker. Vice dean Geert Duijsters confirmed this. PhD students can participate on a voluntary basis, Duijsters highlights.Universities recently got the option to experiment with student PhDs. They are much cheaper than PhDs that are employed by the university. Doctoral students have to graduate within four years instead of three and they will not have the obligation to teach. Doctoral employees teach on a large scale. The experiment is received with quite some skepticism, in particular by student and employee unions. In their opinion, the experiment is way too extensive and doctoral students are contractually disadvantaged. The universities in The Netherlands react in different ways. Radboud University Nijmegen does not participate, others (Utrecht, Groningen and Wageningen) do. At Tilburg University, Rector Philip Eijlander initially said that there were no concrete plans for participation, this turned out differently. TiSEM joins in the experiment to see what the pro’s and cons of participation are, says Duijsters. “This does not mean that we are automatically in favor of this system. We want to see what this means in practice.”
