Jan Völkel nieuwe campusdichter

Jan Völkel is de nieuwe campusdichter van Tilburg University. Uit alle stukjes proza en poëzie werd hij tot winnaar gekroond tijdens de jaarlijkse Poetry Party in het campuscafé.

Hij volgt hiermee de campusdichtster Chiara Raucea op. De Italiaanse promovenda werd vorig jaar verkozen tot campuspoëet. Bij de Poetry Party werden dit jaar veel Engelstalige gedichten voorgedragen. Net als vorig jaar viel de keuze op een internationale student, ditmaal van Duitse komaf.

Met zijn Duits-Amerikaanse accent won hij de jury voor zich. De gedichten van Jan zijn dit jaar te bewonderen in Univers.

De nieuwe campusdichter imponeerde de jury onder anderen met zijn gedicht My Friend and I:

My friend and I would like to play soccer.
They say, he can, but you can’t because you are white.

My friend and I would like to study math.
They say, she can, but you can’t because you are male.

My friends and I would like to have sex.
They say, they can, but you can’t because you are smart.

My friend and I would like to leave the church.
They say, she can, but you can’t because you are straight.

My friends and I would like to live in the Netherlands.
They say, she can, but you can’t because you are from Belgium Syria.
