Party leaders: Yara Muller (student party SAM)

The University Council elections commence the second week of April, but they already are more eventful than previous years. Not only can a new student party be found on the ballot for the first time in ten years, but also, the ABVAKABO staff party has merged with the Onafhankelijken (independent) staff party. Who should you choose? Univers asks the candidates at the top of the ballot. This time Yara Muller (student party SAM) gets the floor.

Why do you want to be on the University Council?
“I have been walking around on this campus for about four years. I see a lot of things that go well, but also points for improvement. I want to do something about that. I also think it’s really cool to have the opportunity to represent 13,000 students.”

What would you like to add to the University Council?
“First of all, putting words into action. I want transparency about debates in the University Council for the average student. The things that are decided in the council are important, and deserve more than the election circus and cronyism.”

What are the key issues for your party in the upcoming election?
“Digitalization, first of all. We are working hard to create a digital platform, together with the university. We have the technology, but now we have to make it happen. We also want to introduce a flexible semester, so students can do an internship or take part in an exchange program without a delay to their course.”

What has student party SAM accomplished so far?
“A lot. I am proud that we’ve been very influential in the development of the university’s digitalization mission statement. We’ve also been instrumental in giving international students a chance to get structurally involved, by establishing the VOIS committee. But I’m also proud of a lot of practical matters, such as increased opening hours of the university library and the Mensa restaurant, more study spaces and the exam scheduler.”

Why should students vote for student party SAM?
“We focus on all students. They are the reason we want to make things better. We work towards this goal based on a focus on the quality of education, on student facilities and on opportunities for students to broaden and deepen their knowledge.”
