Scientist asked to review his own paper

A curious incident in the world of science. Professor of Economics Serdar Sayan was asked to review his own paper. It turned out an old article of him had been plagiarized.

In an interview with Retraction Watch, Sayan tells about his odd experience. The Scandinavian Journal of Economics asked him to read a submission. As soon as Sayan started reading, he got an eerie feeling. At the end of the article he was sure. He was reading his own paper, plagiarized word for word. His own article was published a couple of years ago. Sayan contacted the journal, which rejected the paper and contacted the author.

Sayan: “I have been asked by a journal to serve as a referee for my own paper. Obviously, this sounds just as unlikely, and probably almost as intriguing, as saying ‘I have attended my own funeral.”

Pressure
According to Sayan, plagiarism is fueled by academic globalization. Many scientists would lack the language skills to write a proper article in English. Since the publications of articles is highly important for a scientific career, some scientists bow to the pressure and plagiarize.
