Refugee students eligible for €10,000 encouragement prize

Refugee students with an interest in academic research can compete for a substantial encouragement prize. The Foundation for Refugee Students (UAF) will award €10,000 for the best research proposal on a topic connected to human rights, foreign policy or the migrant crisis.

The winner of the Peter Baehr Prize is expected to use the prize to pursue a PhD position. All first- or second-generation refugees living in the Netherlands are eligible to submit a proposal for PhD research or a scientific publication. The deadline for submitting a proposal is October 15th.

About the prize

The prize is named after former UAF chairman Peter Baehr (1935 – 2010), who was an important proponent of human rights. This year, the UAF will present the prize for the fifth time. Last year, the winning proposal was submitted by Leiden University student Osham Hashemi, who fled his home country Afghanistan in the late 1990s. His PhD proposal focused on the way migrant workers are portrayed in Putin’s Russia.

With the award, the UAF wants to stimulate the participation and visibility of refugees in Dutch academia. Click here for more information about eligibility criteria, judging criteria and the terms.
