Smoky bars in Tilburg blacklisted

Many popular student bars in Tilburg appear prominently on the blacklist of Clean Air Netherlands, an anti-smoking organization which lists cafes that duck the anti-smoking law. The worst places to be, according to the list, are Bolle, Cul de Sac and Havana.

The special night life guide that Univers published in August was quite positive about these bars. But the anti-smoking organization is less enthusiastic. According to anonymous informants the bars allow their public to smoke and are horribly smoke-filled.

In the guide, Café Bolle was praised by Univers for being ‘the most erogenous zone in Tilburg’, and received an impressive five star rating. Havana and Cul de Sac both got four stars – far from bad either. The Univers-team apparently didn’t care about a cigarette more or less, but that does not count for Clean Air Netherlands. Barend van de Ven, manager of Bolle, is far from happy with the blacklist. In local newspaper Brabants Dagblad he stated: “Bolle tries very hard to prevent smoking. The fact that our name is on this list is unnecessary slander.”

Clean Air Netherlands maintains they are not responsible for the content of their online blacklist, which literally publishes comments from visitors who are irritated by the smoke. Still more Tilburg bars are now on the website of the organization, amongst which Troubadour, Café de Kok, Van Horen Zeggen, Schlappi , De Plaats, The Miller Time, Heuvel 15, De Reünie, Lollipop, Popcorn  and Café Weemoed.
