Internship? No, please, upgrade!

„San, promise me that you will listen first before you say something”, my best friend Carina sounded hesitant on the other side of the phone at first. I stood in front of the window and watered my plants. “Yes, I am listening”, I answered suspiciously. “Well, one of the divisions of the company that I am working for are eagerly looking for someone to replace an employee who is going on a maternity leave soon… they are looking for an intern… .

I saw red. I almost dropped the water bottle and as a result soaked my right sleeve with water.

“Brilliant!” I yelled. “You are interested?” “What? No, Carina, please don’t get me wrong, but I am done with interns… .” “Wait! You promised me to listen! I already had told them that! I said that you have graduated and that you are looking for the REAL job and REAL financial compensation!” “You got that right!” “You are still not listening… they agreed.”

“What?” “C’mon, San, I don’t have all day.” “Yes, sorry, go on.” “The company would like to call you and arrange a meeting with you. I had sent them your resume and they seemed interested. They were willing to ‘upgrade’ the internship into a temporary/part time employment.”

I couldn’t believe my ears. “Carina, are you kidding me? Thank you so much!! Wow, that is great news indeed!” “So, I take it you are interested. Well, you can expect their call this afternoon. Good luck Schatzi, I am off to a meeting! Let me know how it went! Kiss!”

I sat down to digest the news: A temporary/part time employment. Hm, not too bad. This way I would have the flexibility to look for the REAL thing AND pay my rent WHILE gaining working experience to put on my resume. Not bad at all, I thought while a smile started reaching all the way to my ears. Quickly I searched for the homepage of the company and started reading. My smile got bigger, because I really liked what I saw: International, dynamic, excellent quality, global market leader, European HQ in Amsterdam, excellent career opportunities, etc.

I got more and more excited and kept checking my phone. As it rang shortly after some time with a 020 number in the display (no doubt, that was Amsterdam), my heart started jumping with a thrill. Now that I think about it, it was so ironic that this new amazing challenge would enfold itself with the ringtone ‘Pick of Destiny’, because indeed it was.
