Power feminist Heleen Mees: ‘Dutch people are lazy’

Heleen Mees, the assistent professor at Tilburg University who is known as something of a ‘power feminist’, does not believe at all that current-day female students will be successfull in twenty years.

Mees argues that the current-day female student should consciously look at her future.  “She should not let the fact that she is a woman interfere with what she wants to achieve.” It pains the feminist to see that most women still don’t choose for a professional career. “Women somehow end up cleaning the house. And somehow, they will not automatically start to work more when their men take care of the children. Dutch people are lazy.”

Five years ago, Mees – who is an economist, lawyer and publicist – became well-known for her essay Vrouwen zouden nu eindelijk eens écht aan het werk moeten gaan (‘women should finally start working’)  in Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad. In this essay she argues that part-time working women do not only harm themselves, but also all other women and society itself.

This Thursday, Univers will publish an interview (in Dutch) with Heleen Mees.
