Price glass of beer is going up

A glass of beer will become more expensive, even when the prices of raw materials will not go up, Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad reports.

Brewing company Heineken recently reported that the price of beer will rise. According to the brewery this is the result of a sharp increase in the cost of raw materials, such as barley, hops and other grains.

It sounds logical. In practice, however, the price of a glass of beer goes up, whether the costs for its raw materials rise or fall.

The price for a beer in Dutch pubs doubled the past ten years. During that same period in super markets,  however, the price for one liter of beer only went up by 25 per cent. These prices differ as a result of to price competition between the Dutch supermarkets, according to a researcher of the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The battle over prices is still going on.

Experts expect that the price of beer will especially rise in bars and restaurants, and that people will prefer to drink from home. [EV/transl. YV]
