Delayed graduation is often involuntary

Almost half the students take longer to finish their studies due to illness or the wrong choice of study programme, according to a survey conducted by Dutch student union LSVb.

The study was held among 3500 students from various higher education institutions. 23 percent say their delayed graduation is involuntary, it is caused by illness, usually mental health problems like depression, stress and pressure. The reason ‘wrong choice of major’ is cited by 25 percent of the respondents. Other important factors are the need to take a job, and ambition, says LSVb.

Earlier research showed that lack of motivation results in a delayed graduation. The student union, however, has found no link between the two. Only the degree programmes health and technology, where the number of study hours is very high, show a link between delayed graduation and motivation. [EV, transl. YV]
