Student lives on ?1 a day

A third-year Cardiff University student took up the challenge to live on ?1 a day for five days, starting today.  Her goal is to raise awareness for a new campaign intended for people who live in extreme poverty, says Cardiff’s student newspaper Gair Rhydd.

The ‘Live below the line’ campaign will be launched in the UK in May 2011 and raise money and awareness for people who actually live for less than 1 British pound (equals 1.16 euros).

The student, Sophie Gale, will begin her fasting period on Thursday and hopes to complete her challenge by eating ‘no-frills food’ like rice, couscous and soup, the student newspaper
says.
Gale is fundraising for Results UK, a group which is geared towards generating the political pressure needed in order to end world poverty.
