Tilburg University student chooses to stay in Japan

Tilburg University student Pierre-Hendrik Kruijer, who is studying in Japan at the moment, is not planning to leave because of recent disasters – while his supervisor explicitly asked him to do so.

Pierre-Hendrik Kruijer in Japan 2011Nadia Ptashchenko, who is both exchange coordinator at the faculty Humanities and the personal supervisor of Kruijer, is in close contact with the Liberal Arts student and his family. “On Friday morning we immediately contacted him. Two days ago, we explicitly urged him to leave Japan. His father had already bought return tickets for him, but he wanted to stay there.”

Kruijer has now left Tokyo for Hiroshima. “The wisest choice is always the best choice’, my professor Spoormans told me on the phone. Here in the south, more than one thousand kilometers from Fukushima, I am also safe. I think it is wise to stay calm during a crisis situation.”

Kruijer intends to stay in Hiroshima until Sunday. He hopes he will be able to return to Tokyo by then. If this proves to be impossible, he will go to another part of Japan. [EV/trans. YV]
