‘Students should write motivation letter’

Dutch students who want to apply for a university or higher education institution should be obliged to write a motivation letter beforehand. Liberal VVD member of parliament Anne-Wil Lucas will propose this regulation during the education legislation meeting next Monday, Dutch daily de Volkskrant reports.

In the ’cover letter’ Lucas explains he would like to see students explaining why they choose for a certain education program. At the moment Dutch students only have to show a diploma to enroll in a bachelor’s study programme.

The motivation letter will help students to make the right choice. It will maximize the chances that students complete a bachelor’s degree, according to Lucas. In addition, schools will be obliged to give insight in their study method to further enhance success rates. [EV/transl. YV]
