“Democracy in the Arab world is possible”

The well-educated Libyan youth can be the shapers of a new democratic society,  said Arabist Jan Jaap de Ruiter in regional daily Brabants Dagblad.

It would have been better if the military intervention in Libya would not have been necessary, De Ruiter said. This support may later be used against them. “If the rebels win and Gaddafi is gone, they will have reached their goals with the help of the Western world. It will be seen as a blot on their reputation.”

But the most important thing is that the rebellious youth are able to establish a democracy. “The current political and military developments should lead to a change like has been achieved in Tunisia and Egypt; Libya should nurture its capital – the young well educated people that clearly want a democracy.” [TvN/transl.
