Expensive second master’s degree for Tilburg students

Tilburg students who wish to pursue a second master’s degree will be charged 10,644 euros for most study programs as from next year, figures published in the Tilburg University study program list 2011-2012 shows.  For a second bachelor’s degree students will pay about 6546 euros.

In 2010 the Dutch Law on Higher Education and Scientific Research was modified.  Since then European (EER) students who pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree and register for a second bachelor’s or master’s degree have to pay the institutional fee when they have already earned a similar degree.

For students who graduated in 2009-2010 and have enrolled for a second degree by September 1, Tilburg University, like many other universities, has made an exception. This exception was included because these students were not sufficiently aware of the law’s amendment yet.

Student party Sam has advised the Executive Board not to approve the new rule for tuition fee rates for institutions, but it stood alone in opposing this. The employees associations Abvakabo and Onafhankelijken (Independents) and student party Front were in favor of the new rule.

The feet rate for institutions is based on several issues, including the number of contact hours, the surface of the lecture rooms, which professors are teaching and the like.

Nu.nl wrote earlier that the students in Tilburg had to pay 2598 euros to enroll in undergraduate degree programs and master’s students 6546 euros. These fees are incorrect. Nu.nl based its figures on several degree programs at the faculty of Humanities (among others the philosophy degrees). Faculties are free in asking lower tuition fees.

For 2011-2012 the legal tuition fee is 1713 euros.
