Blues and greens battle for council

These days, our campus is populated with ‘blues’ and ‘greens’, armed with laptops. A rough guide to student elections.

studentenverkiezingenWhat do they want from me?
Till April 21st, the race is on for a seat in the University Council. You can cast your vote online. The laptops make sure you can’t escape without doing this.

What is the University Council?
It consults with the university’s Executive Board. Both students and employees are members. They have the right of consent on matters like changes in the student statute and the universities strategic policy, and the right of advice on – for instance – expenses.

Can international students vote?
Yes you can, if your doing a bachelor’s or master’s program in Tilburg. You can’t if your here on exchange.

Who are the greens, and who are the blues?
The students in blue sweaters are from SAM, the oldest Tilburg student party. The greens are their competitors from Front. SAM had slightly more votes last year, and got five members in. Front had four.

Are there any differences?
It’s always good to have something to choose, but there’s not a lot of difference. Front wants to get rid of all non-Tilburg University users of the library. SAM promotes less lectures in the evenings. Ask the candidates for their electoral program.

Why should I vote?
This is your way to influence university policy, the candidates would say. The more students vote, the stronger the mandate students in the University Council will have. The board might take members with a lot of support from the student population more seriously.
