Many students fined on Liberation Day

Dozens of students were fined on May 5 (Liberation Day) for not having a valid train ticket. Although Liberation Day is not an official holiday, their student week pass was not valid.

In some cases, the conductor gave students the opportunity to get off at the next station to buy a ticket without having to pay a fine.

The Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO), former IB-groep, decides which days are accepted as public holiday for student passes. The former student travel pass had this info printed on the back of the card. Since the introduction of the Student Public Transport Pass (OV-chipkaart), students have to check the internet whether they need to buy a ticket – or have to check in – or not.
