Concern about racism accusation Asset Economics

A blog of Chinese student Cheng Xu has caused turmoil at Tilburg University. Last Friday Xu published complaints about discrimination during a study tour of Asset Economics – in which she participated as a committee member.

Although the incident took place in April 2011, Xu has only just written about it. Because she did not feel well, the Chinese student did not join a trip that day. She later had an argument about it with other Asset members. “She told something to another Dutch person, probably about the quarrel between me and her. Then he said in Dutch ‘Chinees…Spleetogen’, which means that ‘Chinese…slanted eyes’”, Xu writes in her blog post.

Also two other international students were told: “You should feel honored that we 17 Dutch people speak English for you.”

After the student had filed her complaint of racism and discrimination with Asset Economics, she had had an unsatisfying conversation with the chairman of the Board.

The blog post, where Xu Cheng has written about her complaints about Asset Economics, has already been visited 1604 times. It has also gotten 56 comments so far, comments by both her students that support her and visitors that do not.

Asset Economics could not be reached for a comment on Monday, but would try to clarify the situation Tuesday. [MW/transl. YV]
