‘Faculty Club is not a snack bar’

A forest view, a few glasses of good red wine and the best croquette you have ever tasted: How beautiful life can be. The Faculty Club opened its doors to Tilburg University yesterday and everybody was present. Just wondering, how did the uni obtain a permit for building in the middle of the Warandebos?

Well, you have to ask the municipality. First of all, let’s ask Area Manager of Tilburg West Natalie Verhaaren: “I especially looked at parking problems, but that is solved. There is a disabled man living here in the woods, so the forest road always has to be open. Furthermore, we did an eco-check of course, very thoroughly. “What about all the ivy that is planted? Will it not climb in the trees and destroy them? Natascha Verhaaren does not know.

The building is a mixture of concrete and glass,  the interior is simple and stylish. Dutch design on a smooth concrete floor. The Polderbank (about 7000 euros couch) in the lounge and the Kartell chairs are meant for civilized drinking, not for drunken students.

Wim Timmermans, of construction company Van der Weegen: “There was an assignment to renovate an existing restaurant, making it fancier. It was our company’s idea to use this location and replace the house with this beautiful building.”

Hans Timmermans, architect: “The son of Wim, yes. It is very rare to get permission to build on such a beautiful place. We wish to refer to Jos Bedaux, the designer of the Cobbenhagen building. That’s why we used natural stone. We certainly did not want a glass box building here.”

Alderman Roel Lauwerier (liberal VVD): “This should not turn into a snack bar, Tilburg also need fancy places where you can receive guests in style. As far as I am concerned, Tilburg also gets a star restaurant.”

In short, Tilburg University has a beautiful new building in the Warandebos. Where you can eat, receive guests, and have meetings. No classes. [Francine Bardoel/transl. YV]
