Eijffinger: Give the Greeks some time
Greece has problems, but is not a lost cause, said professor of financial economics Sylvester Eijffinger during a public lecture at Tilburg University on Monday. “By careful maneuvering, and by giving the Greeks some time, we will also get our money back.”
In the university auditorium Eijffinger held his public lecture on the economic problems of Greece for nearly six hundred people. According to him, Greece should cut its spending considerably. In addition it should start with the privatization of state enterprises as soon as possible. Eijffinger thinks that a new loan to Greece is unavoidable. However, this can only be under the condition that the Greek parliament accepts the austerity measures.
Today and tomorrow the Greek parliament will vote on these austerity plans. If the parliament does not approve of the plans, the prospects look fairly bleak for Greece, according to Eijffinger. “Then Greece can forget it. The consequences, also for us, will be devastating.”
