Compulsory attendance at lectures, fewer retakes

Dutch universities aim to raise the bar for students. Through selection of students, compulsory attendance at lectures and fewer possibilities to take re-exams, the universities hope to boost student performance and education standards, daily newspaper de Volkskrant said last Thursday.

“The Increasing international competition in higher education requires a cultural change”, says the Dutch universities’ association VSNU in a letter to state secretary of education Halbe Zijlstra.

The universities want to introduce student selections to improve student performance and education standards. Besides having good pre-university qualifications, students will have to motivate their choice of study during an interview.

The universities also want to introduce a broader bachelor’s degree system in which it becomes possible to choose from many different subjects, and an honours degree programme for excellent students. The universities expect that motivated students will be faster in finishing their studies.
