Number of foreign students up again

Around 1500 new foreign students, including 300 exchange students, are admitted to Tilburg University for the new academic year. A vast increase compared to last year. Then 850 international students were admitted, 700 of whom actually came.

This year, the university estimates to welcome around 1250 international students during the Arrival Days (see slideshow) today and tomorrow. After the introduction week exact student numbers can be given.

The new foreign students at Tilburg University represent 101 nationalities. The top 5 nationalities are China (190), Germany (87), Bulgaria (68), Indonesia (51) and Turkey (49).

The number of foreign students in the Netherlands continues to rise. Last year, one out of ten students at Dutch universities was a student from abroad. Five years ago, this was one out of in fourteen students, according to figures from Dutch international education body Nuffic.

The total number of international students in the Netherlands is 81,700. They come from 61 different countries. Germany tops the list with 46 percent (24,750 students). China takes second place with 5,450 students, followed by Belgium with 2,650 students, Spain, France, Italy and the United States.

Maastricht University has the most international students in the Netherlands: 42.9 percent.

According to UNESCO estimates there are about 2.7 million students studying outside their own country. Between 2000 and 2008 the number of Dutch students abroad rose by 70 percent, from 0.7 percent to 1.2 percent.
