Another 15 years living at Verbernelaan
The Tilburg Verberne buildings will not be torn down for the time being. The housing for both Dutch and international students will be split up; three buildings for Dutch students, or international students who follow a degree program, and two apartment buildings for short stay student housing.
The apartments in the two oldest blocks (the two located farthest from the university) at the Professor Verbernelaan will be rented to international students for another five years. Housing corporation WonenBreburg has not got a new location in mind yet, says student housing manager Teun Giljamse. “By then there will be a new building where they can be housed.”
The plans for major maintenance have been dropped. Giljamse: “We have weighed costs and benefits. We wanted to enlarge the rooms of the rear two flats, which are now 12 square meters. But it will cost so much that a renovation is not justified.” These two buildings were built in 1969 and have never been renovated.
Three other buildings that were renovated in the 90s will be used for student accommodation another 15 years and will be refurbished through regular maintenance.
