Research culture Tilburg University investigated
The Levelt committee that will examine the publications of Diederik Stapel, also has to form a view on the methods and research culture that facilitated fraud to prevent it from happening again. The committee received these tasks from rector Philip Eijlander.
Earlier it was announced that the committee was tasked with a complete mapping of the Stapel publications with fictitious data or fictitious scientific studies. The commission is expected to report by the end of October.
Two Tilburg University professors and one outsider have taken up a position in the committee: Dutch psycholinguist Willem Levelt, Tilburg University professor Marc Groenhuijsen (law faculty), and Tilburg University emeritus professor Jacques Hagenaar (sociale sciences).
Levelt was president of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences from 2002 to 2005. From 1980 to 2006 he also worked as professor of psycholinguistics at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Levelt is also known as director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen. In June 2011 Levelt was honored as a new member of the ‘Orden Pour le mérite for Sciences and Arts’ – an award for artists and scientists who enjoy outstanding respect worldwide for their excellent contributions.
Hagenaars was dean of Social Sciences from 2000 to 2005. He has earned his marks in the world of Statistics and Methods in various positions. Earlier he worked as academic (senior) officer at the department of Statistics and Methods of Tilburg University, later he was appointed professor of Methodology. In 2009, Hagenaars retired.
Groenhuijsen is professor at the Faculty of Law. The Netherlands Academy of Arts Sciences awarded him the Dr. Hendrik Mullerprijs for his scientific contributions in the field of behavioral and social sciences. He also holds a full professor position at Intervict, the International Victimology Institute Tilburg.
