Sports Center renewal plan 2014
The Executive Board will examine the possibilities of partly rebuilding and renovating the sports centre (Olympia building). The renovation should be ready at the end of 2014. As a result, the sports pass might become more expensive, rector Philip Eijlander said during a committee meeting of the university council today.
The central part of the sports center, including the entrance desk, the sports café, several dressing rooms, club rooms, and sauna, no longer meet modern standards. ‘Not surprising, considering that this building dates from 1964 and student numbers have increased enormously since’, says the proposal.
There is a plan to rebuild the central part and to expand by building a new sports hall. The other hall will be thoroughly renovated. The whole reconstruction has to create more space for sports classes, more shower and bathroom facilities, and a second sauna. The sports does not meet the Licensing and Catering Act and will be included in the plan. The new center should be ready at the end 2014.
Student unions Front and SAM responded enthusiastically to the proposals, but are worried about the extra cost for students. The rector said that the building renewal could lead to a higher price for the Tilburg University student sports pass.
