The Dutch skate on thin ice?

What is the recent excitement about the ice in Dutch media? It’s about the Elfstedentocht, an ice skating race that was supposed to take place this winter. The last time the race was held in 1997, and it will not take place this year either.

The race going through 11 Dutch cities is an important sport event. The skaters start in the city of Sneek and they finish in Leeuwarden, in total they skate almost 200 kilometres. This winter there was a slight chance for the fifteenth edition of Elfstedentocht to take place. However, the ice on the route has to be minimum 15 cm thick and at this point it is still too thin. The final decision was made during the yesterday’s press conference.
