Exams help with misinformation
Because of scientifically inaccurate information, students have often a false view on certain subjects. By taking an exam, they can quickly revise their views, as shown in the research of the American Duke University.
The influence of TV, internet and movies is one of the reasons why students are strongly convinced about theories that are not scientifically proven. Even when confronted with facts, students are very critical and stubborn about their opinions. If students have certain beliefs, there is a risk that they selectively absorb information from lectures and textbooks. They tend to consider other information as untrue.
The journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review argues that these prejudices can be challenged by taking an exam. When students notice that their views are false, they can easily modify them. However, the change is often temporary. One week after the correction students tend to come back to their mistaken belief. Yet the study shows that when the learning and testing is performed repeatedly, students’ knowledge may change permanently.
