Creative after alcohol

What most students have suspected for a longtime finally proved to be true: alcohol makes people more creative. A blood alcohol content of 0.75 improves performance if one wants to solve a problem, the researchers conclude in the journal Consciousness and Cognition.

The study was conducted among forty men. Twenty of them received an alcoholic drink and the other twenty received no alcohol. Then the researchers showed the subjects linguistic tasks. Those under the influence of alcohol were more creative and came up with ideas more often than than the sober men did.

The researchers suspect that a small dose of alcohol reduces the capacity of working memory. This memory is responsible for analytical tasks. It seems that if your memory is less active, you’re more more creative. Thus, you can find be less obvious solutions to problems. The test is performed with a blood alcohol content of 0.75. It is not yet known if more alcohol makes you more creative.
