“Universities mess with numbers”

“Universities mess with figures on science fraud. The cover-up culture still exists”, says a science journalist Frank van Kolfschooten basing on his own research, in an interview with the Volkskrant.

In response to the Stapel affair, van Kolfschooten sent a letter to ten thousand scientists asking if they ever noticed any science fraud. There were many answers. One thousand responses ranging from ‘I know nothing’ to stories about fabrications form the basis of a book that will be published this autumn. It is a continuation of the book “False Progress” about science fraud published in 1993.

According to the journalist, scientists want to be informed about frauds, but in some cases the universities are trying to cover up the problem. “Scientists like me will respond. But there are universities that are warning people about my research. I hear one story from the scientists, and a different one from the official bodies. I think the universities mess with the figures. The cover-up culture still exists. “
