Tilburg University prefers Google’s cloud service over Microsoft’s

Microsoft’s cloud computing software division won’t have TiU’s patronage. The University wants to migrate software and student accounts to the cloud. Primarily, Library and IT Services were keen on using Microsoft’s Office 365. However, Microsoft could not provide all the required services before the launch date (the start of the summer holidays) and therefore Google’s service is now preferred.

In an article on Webwereld Corno Vromans, managing director of Library and IT Services, says that all other issues – raised in 2010 – with Google’s service have since been resolved. In 2010, when Microsoft was selected, Google’s service was covered by American law, while Microsoft’s service was covered by EU law. This was a huge concern for students. When the administrators heard about the inevitable delay, they had no other choice but to utilize Google’s cloud service over Microsoft’s.

Univers will interview mr. Corno Vromans, managing director of Library and IT Services, about this issue next Wednesday.
