“Zijlstra’s measure is bizarre” according to VSNU

The Association of Universities (VSNU) reacted on the measure taken by State Secretary of Education Halbe Zijlstra. This measure aims at fewer students coming to study in the Netherlands for financial reasons by getting basic grants for foreign students less available.

The VSNU called this project “bizarre” and “counterproductive”. They remark, that increased amount of working hours required for obtaining the basic study finance will significantly slow the study pace. The VSNU adds that foreign students do not come to the Netherlands for economic reasons, but because of good education.

That according to the VSNU Zijlstra’s measure “is particularly designed to discourage foreign students coming to the Netherlands.” According to the VSNU Netherlands should appreciate foreign students more.
