Faculty policy changes after Stapel case

All PhD’s at Tilburg University (Faculty of Behavioral Sciences) must be accompanied by at least two supervisors. The PhD thesis must also be based on an empirical psychological data, collected and analyzed by the candidate himself.

It should also be mentioned how and where the data is collected. In addition, more research must be done twice and must be kept in archives at least five years after publication, and made available on request.

The measures are taken by the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (Faculty of Social Sciences) after the Stapel case, and it was announced today at the faculty meeting. The faculty took the recommendations of the Levelt committee seriously.

This was not a surprise. Dean Klaas Sijtsma already said earlier that the university had no choice than to copy all recommendations. “The Stapel fraud was detected here. This means that all people in Netherland are looking at us. If we don’t adopt the recommendations, it is automatically a cause for negative press,” said Sijtsma at the end of 2011.
