Mandatory unsubscription for resits
Students have to unsubscribe from a resit if they do not intend to participate. And if a student has sufficiently met for the first exam, he / she is automatically unregistered for the re-exam. In this way the university wants the reduce the number of No Shows during exams and resits.
However, there will be no fines if a student fails to unsubscribe. The University is subject to the Law on Higher Education and has no power to impose such financial consequences. It would also result in high administrative costs.
Currently, students must register for resits even before they know whether they have passed their first exam. You cannot unsubscribe in the current system, once the registration is closed. The No Show rate in the first examinations is 19%. The percentage of No Show at resits was significantly higher in January 2012 and was at 63%.
During the resits, according to the university, the rooms are half empty. And there are extra costs involved, such as for printing, room reservation (at external venues) and supervisors. Employing supervisors costs 475,000 euros annually, the printing of exams and resits take another 120,000 euros and 64,000 euros is spent on room reservation.
Thus, the university must cut costs. When the number of No Shows will be reduced by 10%, the institution will also save 10% on printing costs. The situation with supervisors is slightly different. If the number of No Shows will be reduced by 10%, the savings on hiring supervisors will be reduced by 2.5%. As a rule, for every 50 students, one person has to be present to keep an eye on students.
