Laptop theft on campus

Tilburg University is no Utopia, unfortunately: shit, like theft, happens here as well.  A brand new laptop was stolen on Monday. The security team of Tilburg University says that the theft of major equipment such as laptops happens sporadically: once or twice a year.

The laptop of student Tim Remie was stolen from the university library. He was away for lunch between one and two o’clock. In the meantime, his laptop disappeared from his desk. Tim: “I was apparently too trusting, I always leave my laptop at my workplace; I did not expect somebody would steal it.”

“When I discovered the latptop was gone, I asked other students if anyone had seen something, but nobody did or they had been away themselves for lunch when it happened.” Remie went to campus security, where the security cameras were checked. Apparently the videos were not sharp enough to judge who had taken something.

“It is very annoying”, Remie says, “I lost all my files and the laptop was only four months old.” Remie reported the laptop theft to the police.

A security employee: “Previously, we sometimes placed an unattended laptop in custody. We would leave a note that the laptop could be collected at the desk. We got so much crap from students that we stopped doing that.” Nevertheless security guards keep an eye on laptops that are left unattended for a long time, but that is no guarantee that it is not stolen. So be careful.
