Netherlands sees increase international students
The number of international students studying in the Netherlands has consistently been on the rise. A total of 87,000 students came to the Netherlands in the 2011-12 academic year, either doing a complete course or a part of it.
This is evidenced by mobility statistics published by Nuffic, the Netherlands organization for international cooperation in higher education. The Mapping Mobility 2012 report shows that both inbound and outbound stu-dent mobility has risen.
The number of international students in the Netherlands has increased yet again, as is shown by the figures of 2010-11 and 2011-12. The total of en-rolled students has grown from 8.1 per cent to 8.4 per cent. The number of international students has seen a bigger increase at universities (from 7.7 per cent to 11.2 per cent) than at universities of applied sciences (from 6 to 6.8 per cent). On the whole though, it is still true that more interna-tional students are doing a course at a university of applied sciences than at a university. Of the students whose country of origin is known, most came from Germany (26,050), China (5,700), Belgium (2,900), Spain (2,200) and France (2,150). The growth of the number of German students coming to the Netherlands has decreased. This is however compensated by larger numbers of students coming from Bulgaria, Greece, the UK, Italy and France.
The number of Dutch students (46,300) going to study abroad has also risen. Of the students of whom it is known to which country they went, most left for the UK (6,660), Belgium (5,450), Germany (2,250) the USA (1,850) and Spain (1,650).
