TiU boat at Heineken Drakenboot Festival

On Saturday, September 15, at Piushaven several teams will participate in a 200 meters race  in dragon boats. Tilburg University is also taking part in the race. The TiU boat will compete against 15 other teams from companies, organizations, and students. Even one of the departments of Gemeente Tilburg joined the race.

Even if you don’t plan on rowing yourself,  Heineken Drakenboot Festival still sounds like a lot of fun. Tilburg student portal StuGood.org and the Junior Kamer Hart van Brabant organized a lot of attractions for the visitors. Besides watching the exciting race there will be music, good food and drinks at the Asian marketplace set up in collaboration with Mundial Productions. There will be also performances of a percussion band and demonstrations of Asian sports. The entrance is free.

The project leader of International Office, Juul Castelijns, will be one of the representatives of TiU. And the boats are not just ordinary rowing boats. The dragon boating is an ancient Chinese sport, which more than 2,000 years ago was performed as a fertility ritual for the crops on the shores of the South China valleys. Several years ago the sport has become popular in Europe and is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The boats racing on Saturday at Piushaven are over 12 meters long and 1 meter wide. Teams of 17 people will race accompanied by loud drum beats.

The event starts at noon and lasts until the evening.
