‘Living limitless’ with TEDx

Study Union Asset | SBIT is organizing a TEDx-event for the 13th of February 2014. The theme of the day will be ‘living limitless’. It will be the second time such an event is held, replacing the annual symposium. Licensee Joep van Dingenen: “In 2012 we had TEDxTilburgUniversity. It was very popular, one hundred sixty people applied for that, and we only had a hundred spots. For decades we held a symposium each year and we wanted to get rid of that. TEDx seemed like a good replacement for that.”

During these gatherings, people from all kinds of fields come to give ‘the presentation of their lives’ in eighteen minutes. The TEDx-concept is very popular.  The ‘x’ in TEDx stands for an ‘independently organized event’, a derivative from the original TED. If you want to organize a TEDx-event, you have to apply for a license. Van Dingenen and co-organizer Denis Oei tell about their plans.

Where does the theme ‘living limitless’ come from?
Joep: “The theme ‘living limitless’ fits a lot of different approaches, people from different disciplines can use it for their own story. Not only technical subjects, but also things like music or theology are an option.”

How do you get permission to have a TEDx-event on your university?
Joep: “If you want to organize a TEDx-event you will have to ask for a license. After you did this, online, people in America will take your request into consideration. They also might contact you on Skype. During that conversation they question some of your plans, with us they wondered whether the event is not going to be too technical.  They think it’s important that a TEDx-event fits TED.”

Do you have a favourite ‘TED-talk’?
Denis: “Yes. Sir Ken Robinson’s talk about our schoolsystem. According to him, the current system is based on the period of the industrial revolution. He uses a lot of British humour.”

Joep: “My First and favourite talk is Al Gore’s talk about climate change.”

TED has a digital character. What does this mean for your event?
Denis: “The videos of the talks will be put online later. Besides that, we want to create ‘streaminglocations’, rooms where the presentations can be followed on a beamer.”
Joep: “Even though it will be possible to view the videos later, TED (and TEDx) are all about the atmosphere and the feeling on the day itself. Not only people’s ideas are important, but also (and mostly) the way that the speakers tell their story.”
