New international fraction in formation

A list of eight international employees will run for a place in the employee part of the university council during the oncoming elections. An important point for them is internationalizing the procedures in the council.

“In the Strategic Plan, there’s a clause in which the university’s wish to be international on all levels is pronounced,” says Tobias Klein, number one on the list. “So the foundation of an international player in the council is just consequential.” The list runs the elections under the name TiU International. According to Klein, the university has already internationalized in a lot of ways, but it is a gradual process for the university as a whole. The other employee fractions, Abvakabo and the Onafhankelijken, were open to the idea, but weren’t ready to add internationals on their list just yet. That’s why a last-minute list was composed out of Klein’s own peer group and there are only TiSEM-employees on the list. “Next year we would like to have members from other faculties, but right now we had to find people quickly. It wouldn’t happen right now if we didn’t start it ourselves.”

Internationalization is not only a goal, but also a means for TiU International to reach more quality in research and education. “Internationals have a lot of good ideas that we now miss out on. Dutch employees and students can benefit from that,” Klein says. The number two on the list, Frank de Jong, agrees. “We work from a very positive angle, and Dutch people can definitely benefit from our views as well.” The two professors don’t think it will be problematic for the council to adapt to international members. If this might unexpectedly lead to problems, Klein and De Jong think they can find enough people higher faculty hierarchy to back them up. They hope that an international employees fraction opens up the way for an international students fraction.
