Delegate for a day in Tilburg
Want to do something useful with your Saturday? Next week, on the third of May, you can try out at Tilburg University what it is like to be a United Nations delegate.
A group of Dutch and international students organize the event, after visiting a similar conference day in The Hague. On their own initiative, they decided to found Model United Nations Tilburg. Model United Nations conferences are held worldwide and are simulations of the goings-on in the United Nations.
During the day, students get to defend a country as its delegate, and visit one of the four ‘committees’ of their interest. “In our study, we get a lot of theory. It is useful to also look for ways to practice things like public speaking and negotiating,” says Maria José Recalde Vela (22) one of the organizing students.
Annual event
Possible committees are Finance & Development, Security in Ukraine, Statelessness and Environment. Confirmed speakers are Caecilia van Peski on Ukraine and Zahra Al-Barazi on statelessness. The rest of the names will be confirmed in the next week. Academic Forum and Outreaching Honors Program are involved in the day, students from the Outreaching Program can get masterclass credit if they join.
Michiel Hoornick (19), another member of the organization, hopes that Model United Nations Tilburg can grow into an annual event. “It is a good experience for organizing students and for participants”. If you want to visit Model United Nations Tilburg, visit the website.
